Overview

Nestled in the Eastern Himalayas, Bhutan remained isolated for centuries, preserving a unique identity rooted in rich religious and cultural heritage. With a population of 700,000, Bhutan is the world’s only Mahayana Buddhist nation. Its deep respect for nature has helped protect its pristine landscapes and wildlife.

The country’s history is marked by the arrival of Guru Rinpoche in the 8th century, the unification under Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal in the 17th century, and the establishment of the monarchy in 1907. The country transitioned to a constitutional monarchy in 2008, celebrating 100 years of the Wangchuck dynasty.
